Nine years on from their debut release, Innerground Records, the label set up and run by acclaimed DJ and producer DJ Marky, is set to celebrate its landmark fiftieth release. Having been home to a slew of top quality releases over the years from the likes of Random Movement, Calibre and S.P.Y to name just a few, the imprint are marking the singular occasion with something very special indeed.
Having previously collaborated with many of drum & bass’ elite, including long standing partner in crime S.P.Y, on INN050 DJ Marky steps up alone for his first ever solo release. Having made his name as one of the most revered DJs in drum & bass, here he showcases his musicality and production prowess as he steps out of the shadows alone. The two tracks on offer here, ‘Ya Thang’ and ‘You Know’, remind us precisely why he remains at the top and will continue to do so with their effortless originality, creativity and groove.
A side ‘Ya Thang’ is a deep, streamlined affair that is executed with all the finesse and nuance that we have come to expect from Marky. Led by the crisp snare clap and flurry of shakers, the track harnesses a huge amount of kinetic energy as Marky deftly adds fine-tuned melodic touches and a smooth, loose bass undercarriage. Add to this the rousing vocal sample and you have an inimitable production imbued with Marky’s unparalleled knowledge of how to get a dance floor moving.
B Side ‘You Know’ explores the subtle soul with which Marky has become synonymous showcasing the smooth Brazillian flair on which he has made his name brilliantly. Laying the foundations for the track with a swinging bassline and rolling break, lush strings, rich vocals and delicate progressions provide the track with all the hallmarks of a classic.
What better way to mark this special occasion for the label than two classic Marky productions that epitomize the quality and timelessness that both he and the label command. Here’s to the next 50.
